The good life in Cartagena!
Well, the fast-paced travel life has slowed down quite a bit. In fact, it has come to a complete halt -- I´m still in Cartagena! ...but never fear, I´m still in Cartagena for a good reason: it´s a very good life here. I´ve made some friends with some fellow travelers and locals that have made the experience very comfortable. The people that you meet when traveling alone is one of the the highlights of any travel experience, and my adventure to Cartagena is no exception. Seemingly brought together by fate, I have made close friends with a Norweigan kid (31), a Welsh native (28), an English bloke (27), and a New Zealand mate (29). We were all traveling alone at one point or another, but have now gathered in the same hostel to share the Cartagena adventure together. Though we are all from different cultures, I have a feeling the friendship will last awhile, as we definitely have a lot in common.
...so you must be asking yourself -- what would provoke someone to bring the adventure of a life time to a halt in one city for an entire week. Simple really, I enjoy being lazy! ...oh yeah, and the city has a great beach and nightlife. Here´s the usual itenary:
Noon - Wake up and have an early (yeah right) breakfast of huevos y pan
3:00 -- After waking up the other lazies in the group, head to the beach in Bocagrande.
3-6: Fight off beach vendors offering massages, hats, seafood, drinks ...though I will admit that I´ve purchased each one of these at one time or another.
8 -- Try out one of the many amazing restaurants in the city that are very reasonably priced.
10-12 -- Return to the hostel in hopes of achieving the proper state of mind for the night´s adventures.
12-6 -- clubbing! This is my workout for the day.
This is all good fun, but the time has come to move on. I plan to travel to Santa Marta today and set up camp for 5-7 days. I plan to hike in to Parque Tayrona this weekend, and may also learn to Scuba dive as this location is well-known for offering the cheapest certification course in the world. We´ll see what happens -- I´m not sure I need another expensive hobby in my life, but on the other hand, it does offer an adventurous outlet at the beach.
